Media Training 101 Tip of the Month
Video 101-The Basics
Over there past few days I have heard from two different people who attempted to shoot and edit their own company video, only to realize it is more difficult and time consuming than it looks (despite all of Steve Job's best efforts, which we thank him for).
The first and best tip I can give is, "hire a professional". Remember, any video you put out there will reflect upon your company reputation and image, so if the video looks bad, so will you. Having said that, I also understand that not all non-profits, soccer moms, or even small businesses have a budget to work with for a video, especially in this economy.
So for those about to shoot and edit, I salute you, and offer these tips:
Use a tripod. Whether for B-Roll (action shots) or interviews, using a tripod will instantly improve the overall quality of your footage. No one wants to see shaky footage of anything other than an earthquake.
Vary your shots. No matter what you are shooting, get a wide shot, medium shot, and close-up of the subject matter. This makes editing so much easier to do, and avoids the dreaded "jump cut", when the subject appears to jump from one scene to the next.
Audio is important. There are thousands of videos on You Tube, and with most of them, you can't hear what is being said. If you have a clip- on mic, use it. If you have a shot gun type mic, buy a cheap cable extension at Radio Shack and hold the mic just under the chin of the subject. If your camera has a built in mic only and you are capturing interviews, you need to stand very close to the subject to be able to capture a decent audio level.
Three simple tips which should improve any video. But when in doubt, hire the pro. |
